Biography

RICK FLETCHER

Born: August 23, 1955 
Place: Cottonwood, AZ 
Grew Up: Payson, AZ 

Career highlights: Rick grew up in a music family singing in church & around the family piano. During college he met Buck Owens, a great influence in his life. Rick worked for Buck for almost 10 years. Rick has been on the same stage with Buck Owens, Susan Raye, The Buckaroos, Merle Haggard, Mickey Gilley, Hank Williams Jr., Johnny Cash, The Judds, and many more. Later, as a radio DJ & TV anchor, Rick had the opportunity to meet, visit and interview many more of his heroes. But his newest heroes are closeby. Three very important people have encouraged Rick to revisit his music, write new material, and present his music to the world; Betty Sue (Fletcher) Conway… sister, Raymond Law… best friend, and Jonathan Fletcher, his son. To them, he owes a debt of gratitude. The music of Rick Fletcher is a reflection of his Christian upbringing, his life experiences, and current events. Much of his music is centered around memories of the town of Payson, Arizona where he grew up. I've done many things in my lifetime. In my younger years I played in my back yard, pretending to be a TV Talk Show Host. I even went so far as to build a camera out of a cardboard box with a can in the end to look through. I stuck it up on a broom handle, set up a piece of wood on two saw horses, and used a microphone I had made out of some of dad's old pipe. I would look at the camera, do the news, pretend to be interviewing all of the top people on my "talk show", guess that's what living out in the woods in Payson back then could do to a kid! Later, after learning to play guitar & piano a little, I began to experiment with becoming a radio DJ. As a kid I had that old white plastic Westinghouse radio with the big dial on the front, a KTUF sticker on top, and it was always set to Bucks radio station in Phoenix. Now that I had a few pieces of music equipment, couple of real microphones, little mixer board & stuff, I connected everything to a couple of old turntables. Then connected an output to a cassette tape recorder. Now I spent my time envisioning I was a DJ! I would play all my sister & brothers old 45's and talk between them all, recording the masterpiece on that little cassette.

After high school in Payson I attended Grand Canyon College. This is when I met John Ballance through a mutual friend at the college, Ruthann Archer. Ruthann had joined the "Rick Fletcher & The Forrest Brothers" group singing Gospel music around Phoenix at the time. John was a marvelous man who was Program Director of KHEP-AM in Phoenix. KHEP was the primary Christian station at that time. Ruthann told me that I should get into radio... and that I had a voice for it. She worked in the office at the station and introduced me to John. The station only had a "daytime" license, so it signed off every evening at sundown, which changed month to month. At this particular time, they signed off at 6:30pm. The only employment they had available was to "fill" time after John's afternoon show until signoff. John ended at 6. They hired me to do "Evening Serenade" from 6 to 6:30 each evening until the days got longer. That was my first radio job. I was also attending Broadcasting School so had a keen interest in moving up the ranks in the business. 

It wasn't long until I had been moved from that evening show to a full time position from 10am-2pm. It was during this time that I received a call from Larry Daniels, Program Director for KNIX at the time in Phoenix. Larry said he had a weekend job open and would like to talk to me about it. After the interview I was an employee of KNIX, 10-2 on Sat/Sun. So, now I'm working radio 7 days a week at two stations. But I'm lovin' it! 

From Phoenix I moved to Bakersfield, CA, the home of Buck Owens Enterprises and went to work as Morning DJ for Buck. He gave me access to his recording studio and I loved it! 

After spending many years with the Owens organization I went into television as a news reporter & anchor, working for ABC & NBC affiliates. In 1994 I retired from TV and started my own production business.

God has sent me in this direction for a reason. If one single word of His message gets to one single person and they accept his gift of eternal life... everything is worth it. I'm sad in some ways that it took me this long in my life to "get it", but happy that God blesses me daily with his spirit.
